Cabrillo High School

The Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo High School in Long Beach CA offers instruction in the arts, science and social studies. There are also several AP courses offered to students. This school is a part of the Long Beach Unified School District.

The Cabrillo High School has a diverse student body. Many students are of Hispanic descent. Although a large percentage of the student population is of the same ethnicity, there are a wide range of races and genders represented at the school. It is not as overwhelmingly diverse as some schools, but the diversity of the student population is certainly not lacking.

A good portion of the student body is on or near the poverty line. Generally speaking, schools with a high percentage of poor students are poorly funded and do not offer a full range of extracurricular activities. In this case, it might be wise to look elsewhere for an education that is more suited to a college student's needs.

While there are many positives about attending this school, there are some negatives as well. For instance, the Cabrillo High School is located in a lower income area of the city. This means that there are fewer resources available to students with ambition. Moreover, there is a small percentage of students that are proficient in math and reading. These statistics are not in keeping with the state of California's overall education standards.

Students at Cabrillo High School are required to take standardized tests in Math and English/Language Arts. Approximately 10 percent of students at this school are able to meet the state's standard in Math, and less than half of these students are able to pass the test. That is a shame. However, there are opportunities for these students to continue their education at a nearby school that offers a better chance of success.

The ACT and SAT are not as widely used in California as they are in other parts of the country. Despite this, there are still plenty of students that opt to take a college prep test in order to gain an edge on the college admissions process.

The number of AP courses offered at Cabrillo is impressive. At this school, there are 38 AP subjects to choose from, including the most popular and the lesser known. Some students are even able to earn a passing grade in an AP course. If this is an area of study you are interested in, it is worth checking with your guidance counselor to find out what the average AP course passing rate is.

One of the most important things to know about AP courses is that they are designed to be an introductory level course for a college student. However, the best part about AP classes is that they give students an opportunity to challenge themselves and learn at a higher level. They are also a good way to raise a weighted GPA. As a result, students will be better prepared to apply to college.
