The Mighty Axe
The Mighty Axe is a thriving hatchet throwing business in Thousand Oaks. It opened in the Janss Marketplace in July 2021 and holds leagues several nights a week. It offers axes and throwing lanes to people for $35 an hour, less during happy hour.
The axe throwing sport is becoming popular, but safety is paramount. The throwing areas are separated by metal barriers, axes are locked up at night and safety lessons are provided to newcomers. Bradley, who lives in Simi Valley and has a master’s degree in microbiology, started the Mighty Axe after watching the sport grow from a street fair novelty to a rising business star.
He is a member of the World Axe Throwing Association. The league’s annual tournaments are filmed and broadcast on ESPN.
Rust, who is a set painter for Paramount Studios, has become the top player in the Southern California region. He has a world ranking and was recently in Las Vegas at the Axe World Championships.

At the competition, Rust said he thrived on the pressure-cooker nature of the event. It was the first time he’d competed at a level where any missed throw could mean defeat.
That kind of pressure made him want to improve his release. He came to the Mighty Axe, an alehouse and throwing club in Thousand Oaks, several nights a week to practice refining his technique.
He was able to make changes, and his release improved. He has a better chance of making a shot at the tournament next year.
His nickname is “Naked Burrito,” a reference to the paint and wine party where he got his name. His axe throwing skills have advanced, and he is preparing to join a new pro tour that will place him in high-pressure situations more often.
The Mighty Axe is a mountain modern establishment with great music, craft beer and good grub. It is a fun spot for a date or a group of friends.
It is classified as a recreational/ entertainment venue, and the city’s planning commission approved the permit Monday. It will fill a 3,200-square-foot space formerly home to a salon and beauty supply store. It will have six 230-square-foot hatchet-throwing bays, fenced off and separated from the bar area where drinks are served. Each hatchet-throwing group will be assigned an axe-pert, who will go over the rules of the game.
